Teacher Laura Nietzer
Students 6 grade
Saddle River Day School, New Jersey

Laura Nietzer (Geography teacher)  joined the Local History project because she would like this  project to be a way for her  students to learn more about the culture and customs of others in their  study of geography.
Laura says that each student in the 6th grade at the Saddle River Day School in New Jersey has researched a part of their local history that they were interested in learning more about.
She hopes that  you enjoy learning more about the part of the United States where her students  live and go to school.

Saddle River Day School students are kindly sharing information about their research.

  Old Stone House, Bergen County

. There are many places in Bergen County (where I live) where area was used during the Revolutionary war (the war for American freedom) in the 1700’s. One of them is the Old Stone House. This house was used as a restaurant and bar. There is also a cemetery that holds 5 soldiers from the war called the Saddle River Reformed Church Cemetery located in Upper Saddle River, my hometown.

                                                     Vimy Ridge
A long time ago on Owthorpe Lane, Kinoulton, Nottingham, England a man by the name of Sir William Jesse Hind planted trees in memory of his son Lt. Francis Montagu Hind who was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on the 27th of September 1916. The trees at Vimy Ridge also commemorated the 183 other officers and men who died on the battlefield. The trees were sadly cut down in 2008 as they were dying but new trees were planted. People go to visit Kinoulton to see the new trees growing. This is one of the many amazing things in the village of Kinoulton in the midlands of England where I grew up before I moved to America.

The Ramapough Mountain Indians
These Native Americans lived in the Mountains. The Ramapough Mountain Indians lived in Bergen County which is also where I live. Native Americans are the first people to live in America. These people believed no one owns the land or the water. Sadly today these people have all died except for a small amount.

                                   Clarkstown

Ancient Native American trails found in Clarkstown lead to a site where the DeClark family built a mill that would grind grain into powder. The area around the DeClark farm was named Clarkstown after the family. In 1780, George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, and his troops camped on drill grounds near this area

                                         My home
My home is a horse farm. My dad is a large animal vet. He uses the farm as his clinic (his work place) so that he can keep the horses he is working on at the house. At the clinic he does many surgeries. He takes care of horses with joint and muscle problems, broken bones, and he does castrations.

                              Hopper Goetschius house
Probably the most important and well-known landmark in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey is the Hopper Goetschius house. Years ago, in the 1700s, the Hopper Goetschius house was home to the Tice family until they gave the house so it can become a museum. The house is the oldest remaining house in Upper Saddle River, and to this day, tours and events like craft stores and making apple cider are held there.

                                  Franklin Lakes
Franklin Lakes is a very historic town because it was named after Benjamin Franklin son, William Franklin. William Franklin was the last British Governor of New Jersey. During the 17th century the Lenape Indians used Butter Milk Falls, right near my house, to start a winter camp. They went fishing in Micharagrape pond(Franklin Lake). The pond is also right near my house too, it is also right by my favorite restaurant the Indian Trail Club.

                                         Old 76 House

The Old 76 House was a great factor in the revolutionary war. Major John Andre was held captive there, because he was conspiring against the United States during the Revolutionary War. He was working with Benedict Arnold in the taking the West Point. It was referred to as "Andre's Prison". It was actually never a real prison, just a holding place for Andre until his execution.
